Innsbruck's old town is small: 300 metres from the City Tower to the Imperial Palace. This walk links the essentials in the order that wastes the least steps. An hour without museums, half a day with the tower, palace and Court Church.

  1. Triumphal Arch. Start at the south end of Maria-Theresien-Strasse, ten minutes' walk from the main station. Built in 1765 for a wedding; two weeks later the emperor died and the north face became a memorial.
  2. St Anne's Column. The middle of Maria-Theresien-Strasse, consecrated in 1706, with the Nordkette behind it: the photograph everyone takes.
  3. Helblinghaus and the Golden Roof. At the end of Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse: the rococo stucco house on the left, the gilded oriel of 1500 on the right, 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles. The museum takes 30 minutes.
  4. City Tower. 133 steps, €4.50, 31 metres above the lane, the whole route in view.
  5. St James's Cathedral. Through Pfarrgasse to Domplatz. Free, with Cranach's Mariahilf painting over the altar; the carillon plays at 12:15.
  6. Imperial Palace. Next door on Rennweg. The Giants' Hall and the imperial apartments, 1-1.5 hours, €16, under-19s free.
  7. Court Church. Via Hofgasse to Universitätsstrasse, entrance through the Folk Art Museum. The 28 bronze Black Men around Maximilian's empty tomb, €9 or €14 on the combined ticket.
  8. Hofgarten and Congress. End in the court garden; the Hungerburg funicular leaves from Rennweg 3 just behind it if the day still has a mountain in it.

After the old town

The Hungerburg funicular leaves from the Congress station behind the Hofgarten, six minutes to the Hungerburg and on to Seegrube, which turns an old-town morning into a mountain afternoon without a detour. Tram 1 from Marktplatz reaches Bergisel in twelve minutes. Both rides are in the Innsbruck Card.

Food and breaks

Marktplatz and Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse have the cafés and inns; the Goldener Adler has called itself an inn since 1390. In Advent the oldest Christmas market in the city stands on this exact route in front of the Golden Roof, see Christmas markets 2026. Public toilets are at the Markthalle by the river and in the Rathausgalerien.
